Sanetsch pas (Col de Senin)

The Sanetsch Pass, also known as Col de Sénin, was originally built to provide access deep into the high valley with the same name, where a reservoir was planned. The plans to extend the road all the way to the Bernese Oberland never came to fruition, so the pass remained unfinished.

This is precisely what makes it so attractive to motorcyclists today, as such side roads are still largely ignored by most visitors to the Alps. The positive result: there’s hardly any traffic. Only in the height of summer, when locals flock to the reservoir and the mountains above it on weekends, is there sometimes a shortage of parking spaces. But there’s always a spot for motorcycles somewhere.

Leider ist die Passhöhe ebenso unvollendet wie der Sanetschpass selbst – was die Infrastruktur betrifft. Die aber findet sich nur wenige Kilometer weiter am Ende der Ausbaustrecke, nämlich am Staudamm des Lac du Sénin. Hier wartet ein Bergrestaurant nebst kleiner Kapelle auf die Besucher. Die können übrigens noch auf anderem Wege aus dem Berner Oberland kommen: per Seilbahn.

The Sanetsch Pass (in French the Col du Sanetsch or Col de Sénin) in the Swiss canton of Valais is a mountain pass in the Bernese Alps at an altitude of 2252m and can only be reached by car from the south side.

From the northern side, there is a road accessible to the Gsteig-Sanetsch valley station of the cable car. The top mountain station of this cable car is situated near the dam of the Sanetsch reservoir.

Four kilometers north of the pass, runs the border between the French canton Bern and the German canton Wallis.
