Hiking Trail – Biberwier – Fernpass roundtrip
-1. Background / History
Located between the Fernpass mountain pass, connecting Austria and Germany, and the Zugpsitze, Germany’s highest mountain, the small village of Biberwier lies on a steep mountain slope near the Wetterstein Mountains.
2. The hiking trail
In Biberwier, from the tennis and football field, follow the forest trail towards the lakes Mittersee and Blindsee. In the forest, the trail passes the Loisach and its famous springs, follow the path to the Mittersee and the ascending path to the Blindsee. At the highest point, you have a very nice view of the lake.
Continue down the path to the lake. Now, follow a narrow path a bit above the lake to the south bank of the lake. Once again, there is a rise, but then you are at the restaurant “Rasthaus Zugspitzblick”, which invites you to a pause.
TIP: It is also possible to start the trail here, because there is a big parking lot near the restaurant. The restaurant is near the Fernpass strasse B179.
After a short stop you cross the heavily driven B179, and get to the “Schöne Aussichtsweg”. Follow the path until you come to “Via Claudia Augusta”. Turn left to Weißensee – Biberwier. After Weißensee you cross the federal road and go through a wooden storage place.
Now you come to a short ascending trail and you reach the Mittersee, the path follows the right bank of the lake to the signpost Biberwier – Loisachquellen. Follow the forest trail, past the Loisach springs and back to the sports field. The total length of the trail is 10.35 km, it takes 4 hours.
Tip: During the summer months, take bathing clothes with you!
2.2 Starting point
The trail starts from the parking lot at the football and tennis field in Biberwier.
By car: From Wenns, drive out of the Pitztal valley to Imst and Arzl (B171), then follow the Mieminger Straβe (B189) and Fernpassstraße (B179) to the L71 in Biberwier, duration 50 minutes.
By public transport: From Wenns, there is a bus connection via Imst and Nassereith to Biberwier, duration almost 2 hours.
2.3 Turn-by-turn directions
From the parking lot near the tennis court and the football field in Biberwier, follow the forest road into the direction Mittersee – Blindsee.
In the forest, the trail passes the Loisachqellen (springs) and the Mittersee. From here, follow the ascending path (in german: steig) to the Blindsee, at the highest point you have a very nice view over the Blindsee.
Now the path descends and you arrive at the lake. The path rises again and you walk a little bit away from the lake. Then you reach the southern bank of the Blindsee. Once again the path rises, but now you can take a break at the restaurant “Rasthaus Zugspitzblick”. Cross the heavily driven Fernpassstraße B179, now you arrive at the “Schöne Aussicht Weg” (in English “road with a nice view).
Follow the path until you reach the Via Claudia Augusta. This was an ancient Roman road which linked the valley of the Po River in Italy with Rhaetia (modern Southern Germany) across the Alps. Turn left to Weißensee – Biberwier.
After the Weißensee you cross again the B179 and you walk through a wood storage area. Again the path rises and you arrive at the Mittersee, walk along the right bank of the lake to the signpost Biberwier – Loisachqellen. Follow the forest road, past the Loisachquellen (springs), back to the parking lot of the tennis court and football field in Biberwier.
2.4 Duration
For people used to heights it takes 4 hours to reach the destination. For others it will take zz minutes more. When enjoying the scenery more relaxed, taking photos etc. it will take around xx hours. Going down to the village yy goes much faster; around xx hours including zz minutes break for people not used to heights.
