2. The hiking trail

2.1 Summary

This hiking trail to the Kranzberg mountain and along the lakes Lautersee and Ferchensee is very popular. Along the way you will find plenty of resting points to enjoy the view, to swim or to eat or drink something. The trail can be shortened by starting with a ride with the Kranzberg chairlift, which was built in 1949 (price €6, you gain a height of 240 meters).

For people used to heights this trail takes 4 hours. When enjoying the scenery more relaxed, taking photos etc. it will take around 5 hours.

2.2 Starting point

The trail starts at the parking lot of the Kranzberg chairlift in Mittenwald.

How to get there:

By car: From Wenns, drive out of the Pitzal valley to Arzl, follow the A12 to Innsbrück, take the exit 101 to Seefeld. Then follow the B177 to Mittenwald.

By public transport: First, take the bus from Wenns to Imst (bus 4204, 20 minutes). There is a train connection between Imst and Innsbrück (1,15 hour), take the bus to Mittenwald (1,15 hour).

2.3 Turn-by-turn directions

The trail starts at the left side of the valley station of the chairlift. Along a small chapel and further up to the left. We pass the hut St. Anton and the top mountain station of the chairlift. We pass the valley station of the Kranzberg top lift (out of service) and follow the signs. After the Kranzberghaus, take the road to the right.

Within 5 minutes you reach the top of the mountain Kranzberg. Here you can enjoy the 360° panoramic view. From the top you take the descent to the right, follow the signposts to the lake Ferchensee. Through a mountain forest and over beautiful meadows we reach the lake in about 30 minutes. Here you can swim in the lake or rest at the Gasthaus.

Walk over the bank road around the lake. Especially in the early morning hours, the reflections on the smooth water surface are fascinating. At the other side of the lake, take a road into the forest, follow the signs Ederkanzel. Near the lake Lautersee, take the road to the right. Now the trail rises, after 30 minutes you reach the Berggasthof Ederkanzel. Its terrace is located on the border of Germany and Austria and apart from very good meals and drinks, you can also enjoy a great view in different directions.

Walk back over the same way, turn right along the lake Lautersee. Pass the Lautersee alm, you can take a look at the chapel Maria Königin. Behind the chapel turn to the right, follow the signpost Kranzberg chairlift. On the small high path there are still some beautiful viewpoints, such as the Leinbach waterfall and the beautifully rock garden. Now take the descent back to the parking lot.
